Metropolitan Districts (Metro Districts) are a type of special district similar to a school, fire, water, or library district. Metro Districts are authorized by the state to collect taxes and operate separately from the city government. Each Metro District is different, but they typically provide special services to residents within their boundaries for a fee, including things like street improvements, water and sanitation services, park and recreation facilities, traffic safety, covenant enforcement, and more.
City Council passed Ordinance 2453 last December, placing a moratorium on the processing of applications for new residential metro districts. Existing metro districts will continue to function as they have previously, as the city does not have the power to change existing service plans or dissolve existing districts. Share your thoughts about Metro Districts
Community members are invited to share feedback about Metro Districts in Commerce City during a listening session hosted by the city. Members of City Council and staff will be in attendance to hear comments and feedback from residents. The feedback received during this listening session will help council decide on whether to keep the moratorium in place, consider adopting updated regulations, or pursue another option on the future of metro districts in the city. Attendees will have an opportunity to speak one time for 5 minutes each. In-person speakers can sign up to speak when they arrive and do not need to register in advance.
